Personal Exposure Tracking

Understanding how we track your air quality exposure and protect your privacy

How GPS Location is Used

GPS location data is central to providing accurate, personalized air quality exposure tracking. Here's exactly how we use your location:

📍

Automatic Location Detection

Your device's GPS is used to determine where you are in real-time. This allows us to:

  • Fetch outdoor air quality data for your current location
  • Automatically detect when you're at home, office, or other saved locations
  • Switch between indoor air estimates based on your current building
  • Prompt you to save new frequent locations for better tracking
🧮

Exposure Calculation

By tracking your location throughout the day, we calculate your total air quality exposure:

  • Indoor time: Hours spent at home, office, and other indoor locations
  • Outdoor time: Time spent outside or in transit
  • Weighted AQI: Average air quality exposure based on time and location
  • Pollutant exposure: Cumulative exposure to PM2.5, NO₂, O₃, and other pollutants
🚶

Optional Movement Tracking

When you enable location tracking, we record your movement throughout the day:

  • Location points are captured periodically (typically every 5-15 minutes when moving)
  • Build a map of your daily movement and air quality exposure
  • Identify patterns in your exposure (commute routes, frequent areas)
  • You control when tracking starts and stops - it's always opt-in

Location Permission Required

All location tracking features require your explicit permission. You must grant location access in your browser or device settings, and you can revoke it at any time.

How Your Data is Stored

We take data privacy seriously. Here's exactly what we store and how we protect your information:

💾What We Store

  • Saved locations: Names, types, and coordinates of your saved places (Home, Office, etc.)
  • Location visits: When you arrive/leave saved locations for exposure calculation
  • Daily exposure summaries: Aggregated daily totals (hours indoor/outdoor, average AQI)
  • Building information: Questionnaire responses about your indoor spaces

🚫What We Don't Store

  • Continuous GPS trail: We don't store every GPS point or create a detailed movement history
  • Exact addresses: Only approximate coordinates for saved locations (within 100m radius)
  • Real-time tracking data: Location tracking is temporary and only for active sessions
  • Third-party sharing: Your location data is never sold or shared with advertisers

Your Privacy & Control

You have complete control over your location data and exposure tracking:

🔒Privacy First

  • Location tracking is opt-in only - never automatic
  • You control what locations are saved and tracked
  • Data is encrypted and never shared with third parties
  • Delete locations or exposure history anytime

⚙️Granular Controls

  • Enable/disable location detection at any time
  • Choose which locations to save and monitor
  • Pause exposure tracking without losing saved locations
  • Revoke location permissions in browser settings

🌐Browser-First Approach

  • Uses standard browser Geolocation API - no tracking SDKs
  • Respects browser privacy settings and permissions
  • Works offline with cached data when network unavailable
  • No background tracking when app is closed

🛡️Data Protection

  • GDPR and CCPA compliant data handling
  • Right to access, export, and delete all your data
  • Regular security audits and updates
  • Transparent privacy policy (no hidden clauses)
